Choosing a Lighting Column Height
The correct lighting-column height will depend on the size of the area, required lighting performance, proposed luminaire, mounting positions and surrounding environment.
3m and 4m columns are commonly used for pathways, smaller car parks, amenity areas, residential developments and lower-level CCTV installations.
5m and 6m columns provide increased coverage for commercial car parks, yards, schools, leisure facilities, access roads and general exterior lighting.
8m, 10m and 12m columns are suited to larger car parks, industrial sites, storage yards, sports facilities and high-level lighting or CCTV applications where wider coverage is required.
The proposed column height, luminaire weight and windage should always be considered together when selecting equipment.
Root-Mounted and Flange-Plate Columns
Root-mounted lighting columns are installed directly into a prepared excavation. They provide a straightforward and widely used solution for new exterior lighting installations where suitable groundworks can be completed.
Flange-plate lighting columns are secured to a prepared concrete foundation using suitable anchor bolts. This mounting method is useful where a bolt-down installation is preferred or where a precast foundation block is being used.
Foundation design and fixing requirements will depend on the column height, proposed head load, windage, ground conditions and geographical location.
Galvanized, Black and Aluminium Columns
Our standard steel lighting columns are supplied with a hot-dip galvanized finish, providing durable corrosion protection for long-term exterior use.
Selected 3m, 4m, 5m and 6m root-mounted columns are also available with a black RAL9005 painted or powder-coated finish.
Our lightweight aluminium hinged lighting columns are available in heights from 3m to 6m. Their hinged design allows installed equipment to be lowered towards ground level for easier access and maintenance.
Bespoke RAL finishes and specialist column designs may also be available for project-specific requirements.
